About the stone

Malachite

Malachite is a popular stone which has light and dark green banded areas. Found wherever copper is mined, Malachite often results from weathering of copper ores. Large quantities of malachite have been mined in the Urals, Russia and is also found worldwide including in the Congo, Zambia, Mexico, Southwestern United States notably in Arizona and the Middle East.

Malachite was first used by the Egyptians in 4000BC. They used Malachite in jewellery and they believed that wearing malachite in bands around the head and arms protected the wearer from the frequent cholera epidemics that ravaged Egypt. They also ground it up to powder and used it as eye shadow and paint. The Greeks used Malachite architecturally in their grandest of temples. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans believed malachite warded off evil spirits and it was often carved into amulets. The nineteenth century proved to be the golden age of Russian malachite. The sumptuous stone became a sign of prestige and a token of wealth -- so much so that Russian papers of the time wrote: "To afford having a big piece wrought in malachite is synonymous to owning diamonds."

Malachite is known as a protection stone and it is thought to absorb negative energies and pollution. It brings balance and harmony and opens the heart to unconditional love.  Malachite is also known as a stone of transformation, life is lived more intensely under the influence of this adventurous stone which encourages risk-taking and change. Malachite is known as a versatile healing stone and is particularly useful for cramps, including menstrual cramps and is thought to facilitate childbirth.

Peridot

Peridot is the birthstone for August.

Peridot is a gemstone that forms deep inside the Earth. It is one of only two gems (diamond being the other) formed not in the Earth’s crust, but in molten rock of the upper mantle and brought to the surface by earthquakes and volcanos. In Hawaii Peridot symbolises the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanos.

Peridot has been found in some meteorites, making it one of the few gems known to exist outside our Solar System.

Peridot has been favoured since the earliest civilizations for its protective powers. First mined by the Egyptians in 1500BC they called peridot the ‘sun gem’ believing it had fallen from the sky. Pirates considered it a powerful amulet against all evil and when set in gold, it was said to protect the wearer from the terrors of the night.

Peridot is believed to be a powerful cleanser. Peridot teaches that holding on to people, or the past, is counterproductive and it helps release ‘old baggage’. Peridot is believed to alleviate jealousy, resentment, spite and anger. Motivating growth, peridot helps to bring about change. Peridot sharpens the mind and opens it to new levels of awareness. It can also help to improve difficult relationships.
