About the stone
Obsidian is formed when lava from a volcanic explosion solidifies so quickly that there is no time for mineral crystals to grow within it. It is sometimes referred as “volcanic glass” due to its glass-like texture. Gold sheen obsidian is formed when patterns of gas bubbles are aligned along layers created by the flowing lava before it solidifies.
Significant deposits of obsidian are found in volcanic areas across the world, including Central and South America, and in North America. Gold Sheen Obsidian is most likely to be mined in Mexico and the United States (Oregon) as well as in Alaska and Hawaii.
Obsidian was first used as a weapon and a mirror in 700,000 BC. Pre-Columbian Mesoamericans used it to make tools. They also carved it in the form of decorative objects. The stone statues on Easter Island have obsidian in their composition.
Obsidian cleaves easily, flaking off into ultra-sharp fragments of glass. As such, it was used for millennia for cutting, slicing and scraping. Even today, it is used in surgical scalpels more narrow and precise than the finest surgical steel.
Obsidian is thought to be a powerful stone that can offer protection against negativity. It is sometimes called "the stone of truth" because it encourages the surfacing of secrets and hidden emotions. Additionally, obsidian is also thought to be a balancing and grounding stone. It is also considered to be particularly useful for those suffering from depression or addiction.
At widest points including bale, 4.5cm x 2.2cm approx. Gold Sheen Obsidian 3.3cm x 2.2cm approx.
