About the stone
Ruby is the birthstone for July and the Capricorn zodiac sign. Ruby is also used to celebrate 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries.
Star Rubies are a very rare variety of the gemstone Ruby. They display a four or six rayed star which seems to glide magically across the surface of the gem when it is moved, this phenomenon is known as "Asterism". The star is best visible when the stone is hit by direct sunlight, or if sunlight isn’t available, a spotlight.
Most rough rubies that can be cut into stars are mined from Burma (Myanmar), Sri-Lanka, India, Africa, Vietnam, Thailand, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Australia, Cambodia and the United States. The most commonly available Star Rubies are usually from Africa and India.
Traditionally, star rubies were worn by knights in the battlefields to protect themselves from the enemy. Local tales in Karnataka (India) say that if it is worn as a visible pendant or as a headgear then anyone who faces you as an enemy loses half his valour. The power of star ruby is said to be the highest during full moon.
