About the stone
Onyx
Onyx is one of the birthstones for Leo and is the traditional 7th anniversary gemstone.
The name comes from the Greek word ‘onyx’ which means nail of a finger or claw. Legend tells the story of how one day Cupid cut the divine fingernails of Venus while she was sleeping and left the clippings scattered on the ground. Because no part of a heavenly body can die, the gods turned them into stone which later became known as onyx.
In India, Hindus use onyx to ward off the ‘evil eye’ while in the Middle East, onyx is used as a worry stone that people rub between fingers.
Onyx is believed to be strength-giving. It provides support in difficult circumstances and during times of mental or physical stress. It promotes vigor, steadfastness and stamina.Onyx imparts self-control and is a mental tonic that alleviates overwhelming fears and worries.
Clear Quartz
Clear Quartz is the most abundant and widely distributed mineral found on Earth, it is so abundant that almost every rock contains at least a small amount of it. It is present and plentiful in all parts of the world and forms at all temperatures.
Quartz, itself, is a colourless mineral that can be either transparent or opaque. When other minerals grow with it, the colour can change which then creates our other quartz crystals; rose quartz, smoky quartz, citrine, amethyst and aventurine among others.
In ancient times quartz was believed to be ice that never melted, the Greek word for crystal, ‘krystallos’, means ice. In Rome, the belief that quartz was permanently frozen ice inspired the Romans to carve spheres or rings out of quartz to give a “cooling” effect during warm months. This idea persisted until the 17th century.
Known as ‘The Master Healer’ quartz is believed to be the most powerful healing and energy amplifier on the planet. It absorbs, stores, releases and regulates energy and is excellent for unblocking it. Clear quartz is known to enhance psychic abilities and attunes you to your spiritual purpose. It is also known to aid concentration, filter out distractions and unlocks memory.
