The Meaning Behind Birthstones & Zodiac Stones: History, Myths & Symbolism

Where Do Birthstones Originate From?

Many gem scholars believe that the traditional astrological concept of birthstones originated from the Bible and, in particular the Breastplate of Aaron.

The Breastplate of Aaron

The Breastplate of Aaron or also known as 'Aaron the Priest' was the brother of Moses.

The Breastplate was a ceremonial garment that was set with 12 stones that represented 12 tribes. It was said that each stone needed to be made out of a different material that would represent each tribe separately, the stone was then inscribed with the name of that tribe.

It has never been confirmed what stones were used within the Breastplate due to the lack of scientific resources back then. However, it is said that the stones were more than likely named after their colour, due to the minimal understanding of minerals. For example ‘Carbuncle’ is considered to be ‘Garnet' but ‘Carbuncle’ was used in the Bible for all red stones.

The 12 stones of the Breastplate

From how the language is understood, people have come up with ideas about what the stones on the Breastplate might’ve been:

Carnelian, Peridot, Emerald, Garnet, Lapis Lazuli, Quartz, Yellow Zircon, Banded Agate, Amethyst, Citrine, Onyx & Green Jasper.

In the 5th century another Biblical Scholar, St Jerome, suggested that each stone could represent a month, which gave a slightly different list of stones.

It wasn't until the 17th century where you would only wear the stone associated to the month you were born in, all year around. Up until then you would try to own all 12 stones and change which stone you would wear every month.

Birthstones are one of the few ancient traditions still widely linked to gemstones today. They can vary from country to country and often differ from the ones used in the past.

What Are The Birthstones For Each Month?

The Traditional Birthstone list features older gemstones and is sometimes combined with modern birthstones. If you’re not fond of the designated birthstone for your month, you can choose from other stones associated with it. For example, May’s modern birthstone is Rose Quartz, but if that doesn't interest you, you can opt for Emerald, Sapphire, or Agate instead.

What does your birthstone mean? Mythology, legends and history

What Are Zodiac Stones?

The first piece of documentation of people wearing and carrying around birth and zodiac stones was from the 18th Century in Poland, people would wear them for there therapeutic and healing properties. The properties were then associated with the characteristics of the zodiac, making them the talismans for those born in that month.

Zodiac gemstones, also known as astrological or birthstones, are connected to the twelve zodiac signs and are believed to influence a person’s energy, personality, and destiny. These gemstones are different from modern birthstones.

  • Astrological Connection: Each gemstone is linked to a zodiac sign based on the alignment of the stars, planets, and sun at the time of birth.
  • Energy and Influence: These stones are believed to enhance positive traits, provide protection, and bring balance to the wearer.

  • Planetary Ruler-ship: Some gemstones are assigned based on the ruling planet of a zodiac sign.

Zodiac stones are a fascinating blend of history, astrology, and crystal energy. Whether you follow the traditional UK list, prefer modern interpretations, or go purely by intuition, the right stone can be a powerful tool for personal growth and connection.
