About the stone

Peridot is the birthstone for August.

Peridot is a gemstone that forms deep inside the Earth. It is one of only two gems (diamond being the other) formed not in the Earth’s crust, but in molten rock of the upper mantle and brought to the surface by earthquakes and volcanos. In Hawaii Peridot symbolises the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanos.

Peridot has been found in some meteorites, making it one of the few gems known to exist outside our Solar System.

Peridot has been favoured since the earliest civilizations for its protective powers. First mined by the Egyptians in 1500BC they called peridot the ‘sun gem’ believing it had fallen from the sky. Pirates considered it a powerful amulet against all evil and when set in gold, it was said to protect the wearer from the terrors of the night.

Peridot is believed to be a powerful cleanser. Peridot teaches that holding on to people, or the past, is counterproductive and it helps release ‘old baggage’. Peridot is believed to alleviate jealousy, resentment, spite and anger. Motivating growth, peridot helps to bring about change. Peridot sharpens the mind and opens it to new levels of awareness.
